PostSubject: THE SCREECHING TERROR OF HARPY   Sun Oct 28, 2012 12:36 am

Harpy is a Greco-Roman legendary creature of a half bird-half human hybrid. The lower part of this creature covered with brown-blackish feathers, with large pair of wings on the back and the talons packed with long, sharp claws. The upper part otherwise made of chest with drooping breasts and head of an old woman with long wild hair. Harpy emits a strong unpleasant smell that similar to the smell of a dead animal when it sweating. It had a very loud screech that can be heard from miles away. With these characteristics, Harpy often portrayed as very ugly, vicious, ill tempered, fierce and loathsome creature that ever existed in Greek mythology.

Harpy lived in a small group that took over a place with the atmosphere filled with all kind of stench and filth of death (execution or war field, destroyed villages/towns, mountains, cliffs or forest where lots of travelers died from accidents or suicides, etc). Other legends mentioned if there any humans whom dared to trespass these places, they would likely to fall dead in seconds after hearing the screeches of the Harpies that so loud and terrifying. Once the victim died, Harpies will eat the corpse together, even though their likeness not to share the food often leads to the big fights between them.

With the terrifying screech to kill humans, fighting a Harpy without a question is not possible. People whom lucky enough to escape from Harpy only happened when they coincidently walked through the places as the Harpies were sleeping or when the creatures dismissed the humans when they still full with the previous meal they had. Harpy also had ability to contaminate everything they come near, they could spread deadly plague when flying across the towns/villages that could killed all of the residents instantly.

The Harpy origin is related to Hades. Hades whom ruled over the hell created these creatures to seek any souls that denying their death and refused to enter the gate of the underworld, and the harpies will force these souls to go to their rightful place. It is believed once Hades doesn’t need them anymore, the Harpies became wild and choose to live on the earth and preying on the living humans. There lots of others legends foretold the stories between Harpies and other Greek gods such as Zeus and Phineas, showing Harpy is a creature that had close association with the gods.

Being a creature associated with death, tortures and hell, Harpy had been used as a symbol to punish the people whom commit the sin of suicide in the seventh ring of Hell, as been written by Dante in his Inferno XIII during the middle ages. Some of the texts which mentioned Harpies being translated as follow:

‘’Here the repellent harpies make their nests,’’
‘’Who drove the Trojans from the Strophades’’
‘’With dire announcements of the coming woe.’’
‘’They have broad wings, a human neck and face,’’
‘’Clawed feet and swollen, feathered bellies; they caw’’
‘’Their lamentations in the eerie trees.’’

Harpy might a scary and terrifying creature to most of us but the existence of this mythological creature had brings many importance effects/influences in human life. For example, there was an eagle species being called by scientist as the ‘’American Harpy Eagle’’, this was named after this mythological animal. Apart from that, many people whom lived during the middle ages will have the image of Harpy (also synonym with name of ‘’virgin eagle’’) carved on their coats of arms, shields or armors. In addition, Harpy also became one of the important side characters found in many legends derived from different cultures, such as the infamous ‘’legend of Jason and the Agronauts’’ and the ‘’Virgil poets of Aeneid’’ that had been existed and known till today.

Interesting read! I've never heard of Harpy beforehand.
