PostSubject: Blood In Religious Dogma And Cultural Beliefs.   Wed Oct 31, 2012 3:14 am

Most all of the ancient nations hinged their beliefs about blood on their religious dogmas as well as the origins of religion. blood being known as the pure life essence/force because its carried powers, energy, influences and symbolization in their life. Here are several examples of blood usage in different cultures and religions practices :

The Greek people beliefs and concepts.

The ancient Greeks called blood as Aima (haema, hema), which means ‘’make red-hot’’. This word used to describe blood as a warm and red colored fluid. The Greek people considered hema is synonymous with a person life, recognized it as a bright-red liquid gushing out from wounds of humans and from the fresh killed animals.

In the Greek religion, blood had been considered as the most essential element which become the centre of life itself. Blood had been associated with air and springtime as well, and it has a merry and gluttonous(sanguine) personality. They believed the deity’s blood like gods had effects on humans. For example, the blood of the god, Ichor was poisonous to any mortals.

They also had developed many theories about blood, which been studied by the modern science and most of these theories appeared to be relevant. Example of the blood concepts from the Greek theories which being practiced till today is :

1. Death is considered to be definitive and irrevocable when it is caused by lack of blood, like in case of murdering or any other injuries that inflict large wounds, caused non- stop bleeding.

2. ‘’Dark blood’’ mentioned in Greek medical texts was a match with the scientific fact about blood distinction between arterial and venous.

3. From the racial, ethnological and social point of view, blood was used as the main symbol of specific tribal, national and family bond. This bloodline identification is important as it is been applied in many society rules, like for example if the brothers and sisters are came from a same parent, they will known to have/share similar bloodline, which means love and marriage is totally forbidden between them.

The prominence of blood in Jewish and Christian.

Blood had been mentioned in Leviticus 17:11 says “the life of a creature is in the blood” - a phrase part of the Levitical law forbidding the drinking of blood or eating meat with the blood still intact instead of being poured off. This prominence described blood contain some of the life essence of the owner(creature of which the blood belong to), which means drinking the blood would also transferred the behaviors or characteristics from the creatures into the humans, influencing their behavior as well.

Other references to blood in regard to this prominence sometimes connected to the life-giving nature of blood, seen in such events as childbirth, blood injuries and death.

The Indo European paganism and other related dogmas.

Among the Germanic tribes, such as the Anglo-Saxons and Norsemen, blood was used during the sacrifices. blood was considered to have the power of its originator, and after the butchering, the blood was sprinkled on the walls, statues of the gods and on the participants themselves.

Some ancients paganism and religions used their blood to form oath or bond with the deity beings (gods, goddess, demons, etc). Blood is like a personal signature presented or drinks by practitioner as an evidence of the agreement/conjoining that formed between them and the beings, or sometimes used as a symbol of honorable offering to be feasted by the being. The demons especially, are believed to live by consuming the life essence from humans, known as blood or the energy, and for this reason, blood is the most preferable items to be presented.

The Asian beliefs.

Some Asian countries hold strong mystical beliefs in blood. In Asian medication, blood of animals can heals various diseases and wounds. For example the snake’s blood contains lots of good effects for heath if it’s been drink regularly. Some people would used bird’s blood like the pigeons/doves to be applied on wounds since these birds had ability to heal fast from wounds and thus, it is believed their blood will have the similar effects as well.

Sacrificing animal for the blood offerings for gods/goddess is common in most Asian cultures. The blood signifies fertility, powers and will which is significance for lots of spiritual and religion purposes. They gods/goddess will grant all of their wish if they were presented with the essence of the living thing. There is also some purification rituals that requires the participant to draw their own blood for gods/goddess to banished all of their sins as well represent the rebirth of the new themselves.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The modern application of this life essence term being explained from fact that blood carried all kinds of nutrients and minerals that will be absorbed into human’s body and different living things possess different type of blood with different capability to bring the nutrients and minerals.

The beliefs of blood that could affected humans had been found in many evidences. like in disease infection and transferring, contaminated blood with virus could effected the healthy blood of other host as well. The blood transfusion as well the organ transplant also gives interesting findings. Some people who went through blood transfusion or organ transplant found to developed personality changes where they were behaved or acted similarly like the donors whom giving them the blood, and sometimes will develop the abilities of the donor as well.
